A staple when fall begins to roll in, filling your home with the smell of cinnamon and warm spices–apple crisp is something that has become a must-make for me in the fall. I love using sour granny smith apples so there is contrast between the sweetness of the brown sugar and butter.
For the filling:
-3 granny smith apples, peeled and sliced thin
-2 tbsp brown sugar
-1/2 tsp. vanilla
-freshly grated nutmeg
-1 lemon, juiced
-1 tsp. cinnamon
For the crumble topping:
-3/4 cup flour
-3/4 cup oats
-1 tsp. cinnamon
-freshly grated nutmeg
-1 stick of butter, cubed cold
-1 cup brown sugar
First, preheat your oven to 350F.
In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, lemon juice, brown sugar, vanilla, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Toss the apples to coat them well.
In a seperate bowl, combine the ingredients for the topping. Toss well to combine.
Grease a baking dish well. Lay the apple mixture in an even layer. Top with the crumble topping mixture and add extra cubes of butter.
Bake in the oven uncovered for about 50-60 minutes until bubbly and golden brown.
Buon appetito
